Complete setup walkthrough
This step-by-step walkthrough explains what you’ll see on-screen and how to complete each required action. Follow every action directly on the device screen — that’s where the authoritative prompts are displayed.
1. Start the device and connect
Plug your Trezor into a computer using the supplied cable. Your operating system should detect a new USB device. Open your browser and visit trezor.io/start
(or install Trezor Suite). The website or Suite will detect the device and guide you through the process.
2. Update firmware
The first thing the interface checks is firmware. If an update is available, the web app or Suite will present a secure firmware update flow. Always verify the firmware fingerprint shown on the device screen. Never install firmware from an untrusted source.
3. Initialize — create a new wallet
Choose “Create new wallet” if this is your first Trezor. You will be prompted to create a PIN — pick a number that’s memorable but not guessable (avoid simple sequences and repeated digits). After setting the PIN, the device will generate your recovery seed. The seed is typically 12 to 24 words depending on the model and settings. Write those words down in order — do it slowly and verify them. The device will ask you to confirm several words to ensure you copied them correctly.
4. Back up your seed securely
Backing up your recovery seed is the most critical step. Use the included recovery card or a more durable metal backup. Store backups in physically secure locations — consider splitting the seed between two safe locations if that fits your threat model. Do not store your seed digitally or online. If you lose your device but have your seed, you can recover your funds. If you lose both, funds are unrecoverable.
5. Optional: set a passphrase
For an additional layer of protection, enable a passphrase. A passphrase is like a 25th word: it produces a different wallet from the same recovery seed. If you use a passphrase, remember it — if you forget the passphrase, you will not be able to access the funds on the passphrase-protected wallet even with your seed. Use a passphrase only if you understand the tradeoffs and have secure ways to remember or store it.
6. Verify addresses and send a test transaction
Before sending large amounts, always verify receiving addresses on the device screen and send a small test transaction. Verify that the address shown in the application matches the address shown on the device. This check prevents address replacement attacks and ensures your device is functioning properly.
7. Ongoing hygiene
Keep your device firmware up to date. Do not plug your device into unknown or public computers. Maintain at least two separate copies of your recovery seed in secure locations and periodically audit your storage so you can access your backups when needed.
FAQs
Can Trezor be used without a passphrase?
Yes. Passphrases are optional; without one, the device uses only the recovery seed and PIN. Passphrases increase security but add complexity — decide based on your needs.
What if I lose my recovery seed?
If you lose your seed and your device is lost or destroyed, access to funds is lost. That’s why secure backup storage is essential.
Is it safe to update firmware?
Yes, when updates are installed via the official flow. Always verify the update details on your device screen and use only official software.
Final tips
Take photos only after removing sensitive information — avoid photographs of your written seed. Consider geographic distribution for backups and a safe deposit box if you hold significant value. Practice good password hygiene for any accounts associated with buying, trading, or custody services. Treat your hardware wallet as the most critical security device you own.
